Update

Today carried on with our task and succesfully finished them, we had a little trouble with the music as somone had our track so we had to chose another it didn't matter as we found one easily enough!

Preliminary Task

Equipment List

In the our film production we will be using quite a bit of equipment such as a tripod, its make is the model 190XB manfrotto it was made in italy so it is a reliable well made product so we can rely on it due filming. We will be also using a super steady-shot Panosonic HDV camera allowing us to capture some superb high quality filming. We wont be using any lights in are filming except a street light and the natural light this allows less fuss when walking to our different locations. Special effects will be used, but these will be put in during editing as this allows us to analyze the filming and deciding when they need to be put in.

Shooting schedule

Our shooting times during the day

Music

http://live.freeplaymusic.com/#discs=332- Throw the dust - We chose this song for the qualities it held, we felt as a group it really created the tension needed in our thriller film, we used this song for the majority of the film as it really does keep the audience on there feet. Also with the sudden bass drops it really keeps the views interested in the antics that occur.

http://live.freeplaymusic.com/#discs=1331 - Concussion - This song was used at the end as it was a heavier song so we felt  by having this at the end it would create a good negative tone toward the audience. It is also a slow song, slow it works very well with the slow motion clip. The song also builds up in speed creating an added effect with the slow motion effect, making a very affective scene in exciting the audience.

Characters

George (Main Character) – This character is based on a normal person living a normal life. George is 18 years old and has a job working in a window company. George is a smoker, he likes a bit too drink but knows when to stop, on the whole George is a rather sensible character. His method of transport is a moped, which are plot is based around him trying to get to it to get away. George does not normally believe in superstitious behavior but this time he realises whats happening is real. The other character involved is the unknown character which the audience is not meant to know nothing about, the key characteristics of him are mysterious ,shift and lonely. We feel as a group that this works well for added attraction, as the audience will then keep a higher concentration to the film.

Case Study

Body of Lies
Part i
The thriller we are doing is the film body of lies; it was directed by Ridley Scott. Companies such as Warner Bros, Pictures, Scott Free Productions and De Line Pictures were involved with the making of this film. Its time in the cinemas, it made a total of $39,380,442, which was less than it cost to make, which was an estimated $70,000,000).It was released into the UK on the 21 of November 2008.
Part ii
Once I had finished watching this film, I feel that its target audience is very big as there’s everything to gun fight to skillful operations. That would cover a lot of people genres. I think I would recommend this feel this film to teenagers upwards as there are violence scenes that wouldn’t be appropriate to the younger generation.

Part iii
With the technology nowadays, such as the Internet I found that it has helped the target audience to get a feel for the film, and gather information about it much quicker with such websites as Wikipedia and IMBD; they had all of the information about the director of the film, the cast and the production company. Also with this access to the film information timings on when to view the particular film you want to see this creates very easy to watch a film with the technology had nowadays.

Part iv
The film starts with a quote from W.H Auden saying ‘’I and the public know what all school children learn, Those to whom evil is done, do evil in return. This really shows the audience what type of film this is, as I get the feeling from that quote that there is going to be a lot of anger presented to the viewers, it then fades out and tells you the location Manchester, England with a heavy thud off bass, this makes a dramatic moment creating the audience to feel intimidated.

The black effect then gently fades onto a Arabic man and his face is faded by the shadow given us the impression that we shouldn’t know who he is to also back this up a gun can been seen next to him showing that this is not a good person, also by him speaking him in Arabic it gives us a sense of anger and change as the eastern culture is very different to the western. As he is speaking to no one in view of the camera you get the feeling he is addressing us about something serious. This film is set for the more opened minded people as terrorism is main part of the film, and it could affect a large majority of people who have been affected by it.

After the Arabic man speaking, it drifts in to a messy un refurbished house maybe showing the owner is poor, the camera movement also is very slow when entering the house making us feel like we shouldn’t be there. When the camera turn round the corner into the room we find a table jam packed with chemical bowls and other dangerous equipment, the person sitting there also lifts his head up given us this impression that we can’ be seen and also showing us that he is obviously committing a bad crime due to his nervousness and his sweaty face.
The camera then switches on to polices vehicles and swat team, making the audience realise something serious is happening. Even though nothing appears to be happening such as gun fire around the landscape makes you think that there is a more under lying situation happening keeping the viewer interested. A milk van drives through after beening checked the camera films a close upshot of it when driving up to the scene of the antics they would make the viewer suspicious, as it appears to be dangerous.
The Special police force go in with stealth this is when the camera angle go to quick shots, allowing  different angles to be viewed. Creating a chaotic atmosphere indicating a bad incidence may occur. Due to the noises of the swat team the Arabic people hear, this is when one shouts to the other, waking him up very quickly showing that he has to be on his toes ,indicating a bunch of dangerous people. One of them detonates the bomb blowing the whole house up killing majority of the swat force. (END)
Part V
There can be some stereo typical issues in this film due to it beaning set in the middle east, but there are trust worthy people there as there are eastern people working for the USA government showing that we can't judge people on what they look like.

Brief Synopsis

Our initial idea for our film opening production is set in the night, and we firstly pan
across along the empty fields, then it will view down upon our main character sitting
on the side of the road, the character will then hear a bottle roll along the floor,
and becomes very paranoid and starts to make a move, running towards his ped.
The next thing you know the keys fall to the ground and the character is not to be
 seen.

Log: Thriller Planning: 5/10/10

Our initial idea for our film opening production is set in the night, where the light is dim giving reduced visability. Our fist scene is going to be a still shot of the open countryside slowly drifting across it, we feel that this is a good way to start the opening of a thriller as it will great supspence and create a calm mood upon the audience. iThe shot will then change to a night shot filming the character sitting on a brick wall smoking this will show that he's obvisously a stressful person. The shot will then change to him walking down the street when he hears a bottle role, this is when his paronia kicks in and he speeds up his pace of walking and continously keeps looking around, making his way towards his moped The next thing you know the keys fall to the ground and the character is not to be seen.

Case Study

The Usual suspects
Part i
The case study I am doing is on the crime thriller the Usual Suspects. The Usual Suspects was directed by Bryan Singer and the production company for this film was Poly Gram Film Entertainment. The film was brought in the UK on the 25th of august 1995 and it was filmed in various locations in New York. It has made $23,341,568 from the box office around the world.
Part ii
Once I had watched the film I felt that the target audience was very wide spread, as it contains mostly everything a viewer would want such as gun fights for the more action seekers to more technical scenes for the more intuitive viewer. I feel that the film should be watched from teenagers upwards as it contains to much violence for the younger population.

Part iii
With the technology nowadays, such as the Internet I found that it has helped the targeted audience to get a feel for the film, and gather information about it much quicker with such websites as Wikipedia and IMBD; they had all of the information on the director of the film, the cast and the production company. Also with this access to the film information timings on viewing times can be found making it very easy to watch a film with the technology.

Part iv
The Intro to the film starts with a slow camera movement drifting across rippling water, there are light strips going across the water this really creates a eerie atmosphere giving the audience, in my opinion a more horror feel to the film. What I like about the light across the water is that it sort of shows that there is always a glimmer of light. This works as the surrounding image is very dark. The camera angles at the beginning of the film start low due to the man sitting upright against some boxes, this creates great filming as the man who walks down the stairs appears as the villain so filming him three quarters of the way up works perfectly as it keeps the audience interested, due to the wonder of the character.
The way the camera shot focuses on the victims whole face makes us feel his emotion and pain while sitting there. The killer  walks down some stairs towards his victim, the sound here creates a really good effect in keeping the audiences attention, the way he walks down the stairs you really get un understanding of his personality as he walks with a slow casual walk.  As he walks to his victim he  lights up a lighter, this is when the camera focus on the it for a while this gives us the impression that the killer comes across as a bad guy with all the characteristics for it with the hat covering most of his face and the long coat suggest he has a lot to cover, maybe suggesting he has also got a lot to hide. The lighting in this scene is dim this makes it hard to make out face recognition, this is good as it creates a added suspense as the killers face cannot be seen making you wonder out of all the character who it is as the film continues, keeping the audience focused in excitement and wonder.
When the killer walks off the scene it finishes with a large explosion this really creates dramatic atmosphere as it really brightens up the visual effect making the viewer naturally excited due to the action .The way the location of all the drama  is set on a boat during the night is really great as the large boat is very confusing with all its room and passage ways making it very easy for the killer to make his getaway if the police make an appearance, this leaves us with suspense as the killer seems to wonder around quite shifty and slow, in a way making the audience frustrated as they want  him to hurry up with his deeds.
The way there is fuel dripping around the boat and has created puddles shows that there has been former fights before the scene started, this keeps the audience interested as ideas approach the viewers head about what happened.

There are many character types in the film, but there are two important ones which really help with the thriller theme such as the character the audience follows throughout the majority of the film is a thief that get interrogated by two police officers for the antics that have happened recently, he is a like able person making it hard for the viewer to see why he’s getting questioned about it. He is also a crippled on the left hand side making have to walk with a limp and show that he can’t really use his arm, he also is quite a timid person this would also make the viewer feel sorry for him, making it seem impossible for him to be able to commit to any crimes as it would seem very hard for him to do so. Even though he is a cripple there does seem to be something about, like no one would know of, as when he gets interrogated with certain questions, he is able to change the subject incredible quickly given little suspicions about him.
Another really effective character was the mystery villain; even though we saw him at the beginning we didn’t see any facial features making it very frustration encouraging the audience to keep watching. By having a character like that in a thriller works really well as it really builds up the mystery guy, making the audience suspicious of all the characters giving them the chance throughout the film to picture their motives.
An effective part of the thriller was all the fights, drug hand over’s and gun wars as these were all very intensive which would of kept the viewers attention by the amount of shootings. Also many of times the main characters got into trouble which would of really got the audience going ,as these incidences would of really caused problems. The plans the main characters organised, you would of thought they would never work but most of them always did this really helped with viewing capabilities.

The structure of the film must have been very confusing for some as there were many twist and plots. This would make the viewer question what was going to happen during the film. I think by the film being structured like this it really made the film as it really kept the audience involved.
Part V
The big stereotype in this film is the cripple who is supposedly paralysed down his left side. He is a criminal in the film but he is not seen as a suspected to do his incapability’s. This shows that viewers often will not see a cripple as a suspect as they would usually feel sorry for them; this just shows that we should treat everyone with the same standard and shouldn’t judge people for what they are.

Update

Today we carried on with our film preparation, by creating story boards and finding music which as a group feel that will suit our short film clip. The story board that we are creating is a good way of presenting the sequences of your film this helps us to move forward with the production of our film.

Question 6- What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this project?

From the process of constructing this product I have learnt many new abilities such as the camera angles that were needed and shot types such as long range shots to close up to get the detail needed many of these came in to hand when film a clip. I found the tripod of much help with the film as it allowed us to keep moving shots steady and also meant we didn't have to hold it to film which would of produce bad unsteady filming causing wasted time with re filming.

Our three minute task

Gothika

The beginning of the film start we a long creepy start, which would make the audience tense in excitement, the light in it was very dim which gave it an upsetting atmosphere. When the filming started it was film from the outside of a grilled room where these two people where talking, it gave the feeling to the audience that they shouldn't be there. The women who was talking with the foreign ascent gave a really creepy feel to the first seen as she spoke with great depth and detail about the happening of here life, the women who was opposite her was smart and well kept giving a big contrast between them.

Our three minute task

Brick

The light in brick wasn't really creating an effect so I didn't really suspect anything but with the slow camera movement and the high tone of music in the background I quickly changed my mind as it felt like a sad atmosphere, the camera quickly descended onto the dead girl in the river here hand stuck out in the flow of the water it gave a great effect of the life from her body was rushing out down into the water. later on in the film when the boy was in the phone booth a black car drove past with a big engine instantly it gave me the impression of superiority and a sense of a person who likes to look good, when the cigarette got flicked out of the car it came like a threat to me.

Our three minute Task

The Book Of Elih

The opening was very dark and misty this really gave a sense of evil. The sound effects in the background really gave a suspense to it make the audience think what was going to happen around the next corner. The Heavy Bass which came unexpected really woke me up and made me realise that this is a serious film. when the filming start the camera scanned along the floor passing a dead person but the way it passed by the person gave the feeling as if it was not a big deal, giving the reader of a sense of what the place is like, also the I felt by having the dead person on the floor it keeps the audience interested, as they might be curious why he is dead.
